Archived from groups: rec>pets>herp (more info?)

My son received a fat tailed gecko for his birthday about 4 weeks ago.
Since then the gecko has not appeared to eat anything. We have tried
feeding it mealworms and then crickets to no avail. We have a 30
gallon tank with a heat pad on the side and a basking light which are
both on most of the time. Any ideas as to why it is not eating? :(

Although this post is old, I figured I'd write a little something just in case future people need help.

I although they are nocturnal, you CAN use a UV light. I know UV light can affect a herps feeding abilities. So might want to try adding that. My choice would be the new zilla desert bulbs. But other than that I've heard some people force feed their herps when they don't eat. Because well, if they dont they will die. Also, if there was an environment change. That might affect it.

Hope your fat tail did good in the long run.

I think the environment change was too much of a stress for the gecko. I hope that he is better now. But it might also be a calcium deficiency. Was the gecko this sluggish before you got him? Or was the change when it came across you? It depends, we'd need to know more information. If it happened recently, its most likely the stress. If it was like this since before, its most likely the calcium deficiency. Depends on his/her past owners and how they cared for him, too. As far as using uvb for a leopard gecko, you can do so. I always have and I even use zilla desert lights too, specifically the T5s. Tubes, not coils. They're pretty good bulbs for day-time desert reps but I don't see the harm in using them for nocturnal deserts reps. As I said, I use them.
